I recently fell down a rabbit hole and I just have to share it with you.
Here’s the wild part: it’s about coffee. And I don’t even drink coffee.
But stay with me because this may change how you think about money.
So here’s what happened.
I stumbled onto this article about how Starbucks has basically become an “accidental bank“.
You know how their app lets you preload money? You throw $25 on there and it turns into “Stars” you can later exchange for a coffee, super convenient.
Well apparently… Starbucks is sitting on BILLIONS of dollars from people who loaded money and just haven’t spent it yet. Like, more money than some actual banks hold.
AND they made over $200 million last year just from people who loaded money and never used it at all! So that money eventually just… becomes theirs.
Let that sink in for a second.
They’re basically collecting interest-free loans from their customers, investing it, making money off of it… and the customers get absolutely nothing.
Now here’s where it gets interesting.
When I first read this, I felt two very different things. And I have a feeling you might be experiencing one of them right now.
Feeling #1: “That’s such a scam. How shady. I can’t believe they’re getting away with this.”
Feeling #2: “…okay but that’s actually genius?”
I’m curious.. Which one came up first for you?
Because here’s the thing: if you’re sitting in Feeling #1 right now, I get it. I really do. It feels icky to think about corporations profiting off of our forgetfulness.
But let’s dive a little deeper… (we all know this is my favorite part)
That reaction: the anger, the “they’re taking advantage of us” mindset, is exactly what keeps us stuck as consumers. As the ones being played. It keeps us pointing fingers instead of taking notes.
Feeling #2 on the other hand: That’s the investor mindset.
That’s looking at the same situation and asking a completely different question:
“What can I learn from this and How can I make this work for ME?”
Starbucks didn’t invent anything complicated. They just understood something simple: small amounts of money, collected consistently, left alone to do their thing… that adds up to a LOT.
They’re not smarter than us.
They just set up a system.
But here’s the part I need to say out loud.
Feeling #1 is easier.
It’s comfortable to be mad.
Because if the whole thing is set up against us and corporations are greedy and the game was never fair… Then it’s not our fault we’re not building wealth, right? We get to throw our hands up. Stay exactly where we are. And blame someone else for it.
I know I’ve been on that side.
The anger felt productive. But it was actually just… a hiding spot.
And quite miserable, I should say.
So here’s the real question.
This isn’t really about Starbucks. And it’s not even about investing either.
It’s about deciding what role you want to play in your own financial story.
Are you the one who notices all the ways the system is unfair, and stays stuck because “what’s the point”?
Or are you the one who sees the same unfair system and thinks… “okay, how do I make this work for me anyway?”
The one who stops waiting for permission.
Who starts small but does something about it.
Who quietly builds something in the background while everyone else is still complaining.
Same world. Same economy. Same systems that were never designed for us.
Completely different story.
So what if you had a system too?
What if every time you bought something, a little bit went into YOUR pocket instead of theirs?
What if your spare change was quietly building YOUR wealth while you just lived your life?
This is not just me wondering and pondering what would I do if that was a possibility… That’s literally what I’ve been doing.
Enter: me accidentally becoming an investor.
Okay so I need to be fully transparent here. I’m literally just starting to dip my toes into this whole investing world so I am definitely No Expert here.
AND that’s the very reason why I am sharing this, because for the longest time I thought investing was risky and confusing and only for people who understood the stock market and who obviously had a big chunk of money to put in there. If you think the same, then keep reading.
Not too long ago I downloaded this app called Acorns, set it up, and then kind of forgot about it.
And guess what happened?
I’ve saved over $500 in just a few months. Without thinking about it. Without budgeting harder. Without doing anything differently.
And that’s the whole point.
It’s the same psychology that makes Starbucks billions with that “preload and forget” thing, except this time the money is working for me.
Here’s how it works (and literally all I did):
Step 1: Download Acorns (takes 2 minutes)
Step 2: Answer a few simple questions (things like your age, goals, and how comfortable you are with risk. Nothing scary, I promise.)
Step 3: Based on your answers, Acorns picks a portfolio for you. You don’t have to choose stocks unless you want to.
Step 4: Turn on Round-Ups and set up auto-invest if that’s something you want (I do $10/week). Then forget about it.
Step 5: Live your life. Check back in a few months and be shocked.
That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
No research. No spreadsheets. No “I should really learn about the stock market first.” Just start and let it do its thing in the background.
What I love about it:
- I don’t need to know ANYTHING about investing. Seriously. It just… does it for me.
- It’s completely automated. I set it up once and forgot about it.
- The round-ups are just genius. Every time I buy something, it rounds up to the nearest dollar and invests the difference. A $3.40 thing becomes $4.00 and the 60 cents left: Invested! I literally don’t feel it.
Why this works for people like me (and probably you):
If you’re someone who:
- Wants to start investing but feels overwhelmed
- Wants to start small without feeling stupid
- Would rather “set it and forget it” than stare at stock charts all day every day
…then this is your sign.
✓ No minimum to start (literally begin with spare change)
✓ Automatic everything
✓ They handle the complicated stuff while you just live your life
✓ Learn on the go (they have lots of beginner friendly content)
So here’s my question for you:
Would you rather stay mad at Starbucks or steal their game?
You don’t even need to drink coffee.
You just need to start.
